For Labor Day, we decided to hike to Table Rock. This is a hike we have done many times. In fact, when we were growing up, this was the hike we did each year. It is a tough one and this year nearby fires made it more difficult. There are two trails you can take to get to Table Rock. Most people go up Huckleberry Canyon (officially called North Teton Trail 024). The sign at the trailhead says it is 7 miles, but we remembered it used to say 6.2 miles. There is also the Face Trail (Face Trail 029) which is shorter, but much steeper. It took us 2.6 miles to get to the junction where the Huckleberry Canyon trail meets up. It was 5.2 miles to the junction from the trailhead. Like this time, the past few times we have hiked up the Face Trail. It is more difficult, but much shorter. When we were younger, we would go up Huckleberry Canyon and down the Face Trail. Our old knees like going down Huckleberry much better than the Face Trail. As we started the hike, we noticed it seemed more difficult than usual. There was some smoke in the air, but we thought we could get above it. From the picture above, you can see we never got above the smoke. By the time we got to the ridge, the smoke was thicker and we decided to head back down because it was difficult to breathe and we knew how difficult the last part was even when there is no smoke. We were glad we hiked down early. On our drive back home, we could not see the Tetons at all because more smoke had moved in.
